Discuss how Being Human uses camera shots, sound, mise en scene, editing to construct representations of ethnicity

The introductory clip for Being Human is a summary of how the main characters had come to be supernatural beings. Mitchell walks through a forest where he discovers vampires, only to be turned into one himself. Annie becomes ghost after her unexpected death leaves her with unfinished business. And George, who was supposed to die, had discovered he would transform into a werewolf every month under the full moon.

There are many camera shots that create representations of ethnicity in the introductory clip of this episode. The first camera shot is a medium close up of Annie, laying on the floor. We see she has a blank expression, looking almost through the camera as though at a high angle shot, we look down on her, as she lays motionless. Annie is shown as vulnerable (considering she is dead). A Point of view shot is used to show Mitchell looking at three silhouetted figures. We cannot see their faces or ethnicity, but somehow we know they are different. A Close Up of one of these mysterious figures shows his face, making the viewer feel discomfort at the closeness of this shot. He then reveals he is a vampire as we see in the close up, his eyes turn black and fangs develop. Although he is a white man, he is a different being, almost of another race; Vampires. There is a panning shot of Mitchell ad George, as they sit in a hospital. They are two white nurses, showing they have professional jobs, perhaps representing the typical middle class white man, despite their supernatural nature.

Different sounds can be used to represent aspects of character, the settings, time or action. A narrative voiceover, which is asynchronous sound done by Annie, is used throughout the clip to explain how the characters came to become supernatural. The voice is calm, relaxed and her speaking to us makes the viewer feel connected to the character. Her ethnicity is not important, she is just a person we can talk, or listen to. 
Diegetic sound is also used, which is a sound that relates or originates from an action within the clip. One example would be the roar of the vampire, which suggests this apparent 'ordinary white man' is not what we thought. He is different, and the sound is threatening, relating to his supernatural self. 
There is also some ambient sound, background sound that is present in a scene. An example of this would be the thunder within the woods. It is loud and harsh, also quite intense, which could be a warning to Mitchell, the normal white soldier.
Incidental music is used to relate to the action in the clip. It is calm and steady as we view Annie laying on the floor, making her seem peaceful and at ease, perhaps referring to her nature as a woman of mixed ethnicity; no prejudice towards others. The music then heightens as Mitchell approaches the mysterious figures, creating tension and fear. Rock music is then played as George transforms into a werewolf. This could represent his ethnicity in that rock music is more associated with the white, emo type culture.
Mise En Scene brings together the props, costume, make-up, lighting and location of clips. The clip begins in a room with black and white tiles, which could represent the mixed ethnicity of annie. The location where Mitchell meets mysterious creatures is in the woods. He is wearing a soldiers uniform which symbolizes the typical working class white male fighting for his country. After Mitchell is killed and turned vampire, a black crow lands on him amongst other dead bodies. The crow is associated with death and evil, and perhaps the blackness of the setting is demonstrating evil, doom and gloom. It contrasts with his pale skin, which emphasizes his ethnicity. Lighting can also represent ethnicity, for example, as George lays 'dying' on the ground, his surroundings are dark and only his face is lit up by the moon. This moonlight highlights his skin in contrast and shows clearly his ethnicity. One final setting is the window of which Annie looks out of at the two men. This window could represent the isolation she may feel, maybe due to her ethnicity, however mainly because of her ghostly power. The window is her barrier from the real world. 
The final part of this deconstruction is editing. Many visual effects are used to show the transformation from man to wolf. This emphasises despite George being a white ordinary man, he can change into this fearful and aggressive being. An eyeline match is used to show in one shot, Annie looking out the window, which then cuts to her point of view looking at the men. Then the eyeline match reverses as we see George look up at us, which cuts to his view towards the window. Shot/reverse shot, can also be an action-reaction cut, are in this clip to show Annie looking at the men, cutting to the men laughing, and cutting back to Annie as she smiles. This editing can demonstrate the isolation between her and the men, but also the unity she will feel as she smiles. Multiple jump cuts are used as Annie tries to make people see her in her home. The jump cuts are sudden, showing the harsh reality Annie feels as she is 'invisible'. One final edit could be the action match cut from the howling werewolf, cutting to George yawning. The positioning of both the werewolf and George are the same and this makes them seem the same although both are in very different places and doing different things. It is a major contrast as the werewolf is dark and scary whereas George is calm and harmless, dressed in his nurse uniform. It demonstrates the difference in ethnicity as the werewolf is a supernatural race, and george is a normal white working man.
